Beal, translator, Samuel. Travels of Fa-Hian and Sung-Yun Buddhist pilgrims from China to India (400 A.D. and 518 A.D.). New Delhi, Madras, india. Asian Educational Services. 1993. 298 pps. 4-7/8 x 7. Reprint. Hardcover. very good copy in good dust jacket. ISBN 8120608240. Probable facsimile reprint. Black, glossy paper covers w/striations & random indentations, bright gilt titles front & spine, no wear, corners sharp, sewn binding tight. Clean, new eps don’t quite match the text stock; 3rd fep, an abbreviated title pg w/current publisher imprint, is in a different typeface from the (original?) full title pg, some text of which is smeared from its original printing, and from the text itself. The implication seems to be that an earlier printing was rebound for this edition. The new eps are incorporated with the 1st & last signatures in a way that also suggests this, but a careful, historical examination of the typefaces would be definitive. In any case, the text, on smooth, off-white stock, is bright & clean exc. for 12 passages being marked by inked lines in the margins. Edges smooth, clean. Preface, lxxii-pg Introduction, 6x9 pristine foldout map, no index. Flimsy black dj is 1/4 inch oversize, so top edge is wrinkled (but not chipped); silver titles front, spine & front flap, over engraved regional map; publisher list rear & rear flap, price sticker rear, front flap clipped at bottom. $30.00
